Jacek
Majchrowski
the first President of
Cracow to have been directly elected by the citizens of the city
a
lawyer, professor of Uniwersytet Jagielloński ( Jagiellonian University
), full professor of law sciences, historian of political and
law doctrines. A specialist in the field of the Second Republic
of Poland, interested in documenting its history, particularly
the actions of right-wing parties. He is a judge in the State
Tribunal.
He
was born on the 13th of January, 1947 in Sosnowiec . He graduated
in 1970 and in 1974 he was granted the title of "Doktor" (Ph.D.)
by the Law and Administration Department of the Jagiellonian University
. In 1988, as one of the youngest scholars in the history of Jagiellonian
University he obtained the title of "Profesor nadzwyczajny nauk
prawnych" (Associate professor of Law Sciences). He was a dean
of the Department of Law and Administration from 1987 through
1993.
From 1996 through 1997, when professor Jacek Majchrowski was holding
the office of Voivode of Cracow (Head of the district of Cracow),
he was instrumental in e.g. creating a Special Economic Zone in
Cracow and signing a preliminary agreement on building the Multifunctional
Center (Centrum Koncertowo-Kongresowe). He saved "Teatr Stu" Theatre
from liquidation. Moreover, he finalized the transfer of the graves
of the Soviet soldiers from the Planty to the Rakowicki Cemetery
, which put an end to a sharp conflict that had led to public
demonstrations on numerous occasions.
As a President of Cracow he cured the long-standing problems in
land and real estate management; increased the revenues of the
city whilst maintaining a restrictive financial policy, initialized
the cooperation with low-fare airlines and helped in the rapid
development of the tourist industry, culture and sports infrastructure
- thanks to him the revitalization of the stadiums of Wisła and
Cracovia and sports facilities of the "Hutnik" club was finally
begun, after many years of inertion. Professor Majchrowski launched
the program aiming at construction of multifunctional sports fields,
indoor swimming pools and huge sports and recreational complexes
and led the refurbishment and revitalization of the most important
historic areas to a successful end (Rynek, Planty, ul Floriańska).
During his term of office the most important ecological investments,
which are numbered among one of the biggest investments of that
kind in Poland , were made. Moreover, the biggest officially accepted
project on the expansion and modernization of public transportation
system was launched during his tenure. Cracow moved to the forefront
of the cities that take pride in their abilities to obtain funds
from the European Union (more than 1 billion zlotys was obtained
through various projects), as well as the biggest investment effort
per citizen.
Member of the Polskie Towarzystwo Historyczne (Polish Historical
Society), Polskie Towarzystwo Nauk Politycznych ( Polish Political
Science Association) and many foreign scientific societies, including
the elite Associazione degli Storici Europei. Vice chairman of
the Społeczny Komitet Odnowy Zabytków Krakowa ( Civic Committee
for Restoration of Krakow Heritage). Doctor Honoris Causa of University
of Bordeaux .
Prof. Jacek Majchrowski is the author of many scientific evaluations
and 14 history books, mainly on the Second Republic of Poland.
His last book is entitled "Pierwsza Kompania Kadrowa - portret
oddziału" (The First Cadre Company - a portrait of a military
unit) and was published by Księgarnia Akademicka.
